Use EMI Calculator Free →EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed payment you make every month toward a loan. It includes both principal repayment and interest charges, calculated so you pay off the entire loan by the end of the tenure. Understanding your EMI before taking a loan is critical — it determines whether the loan is affordable or financially dangerous.
The golden rule: your total EMI obligations (home loan + car loan + personal loan) should never exceed 40% of your monthly take-home income. Beyond that threshold, you risk financial stress during emergencies, job transitions, or interest rate hikes. A ₹50 lakh home loan at 8.5% for 20 years means ₹43,391/month — comfortable on a ₹1.2L salary, but risky on ₹80K.
What most people miss: the total interest paid over the loan lifetime. That ₹50 lakh loan at 8.5% for 20 years costs ₹54.1 lakh in interest alone — you pay more than double the property value. Reducing tenure from 20 to 15 years increases EMI by ₹6,500 but saves ₹18+ lakh in total interest. Small changes in tenure and rate have massive long-term impact.
Our EMI calculator shows you monthly payments, total interest, amortization schedules, and prepayment scenarios — helping you find the right balance between affordable EMI and minimum total cost.
EMI uses the formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n – 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the total number of monthly installments.
Prepayment can reduce either EMI amount or loan tenure. Reducing tenure saves more interest overall. Our calculator shows the impact of both options.
Keep total EMIs below 40% of monthly income. On a $5,000 salary, total EMIs should not exceed $2,000 to maintain financial health.
